Though they're simple and amusing, there are certain things to remember

It can be very difficult for indoor plants to survive the winter. Warm, dry furnace air kills humid-loving leaves. Short days and insufficient sunlight cause long, lanky stems with no flowers. If you overwater or underwater your plants, you’ll have compost.

Fortunately, succulents come to the rescue. No special maintenance is required for these hardy little fellows. They’re available in a variety of colors and forms to complement your winter windowsill decor.

The short root systems of these plants allow them to thrive even in the smallest of containers. (exactly the stuff for setting up in a row in pretty much any room in your house.)reclaimed wood rectangle succulents are garden

    First Things First

It's important to know how to care for succulents, whether they were a gift or bought at the shop.

    • Ensure that your succulents are receiving a sufficient amount of light.
Depending on the kind, succulents need six hours of daily sun. You may need to gradually expose newly planted succulents to the full sun or shade them with a thin curtain.
    • Succulents Should Be Rotated Often.planet-earth-rotating-loop-animation-future-technology-business-concept-loopable-rotation-of-high_t20_3dJjo2-scaled.jpg
There is a good chance that if your succulents sit in the same place every day, only one side is getting adequate sunlight. Because they slant toward the sun, succulents benefit from being rotated to keep them upright.
    • Seasonal Changes in Watering.
While we all need extra energy when we’re in a growth phase, succulents do the same. While they’re resting in fall and winter, the plants are in full bloom and consume a lot of water during the spring and summer. Overwatering can damage succulents, so let the soil dry between waterings.
    • Directly water the soil, if possible.
Succulents should be watered until water runs out of the drainage holes when they are watered.  Use less water if your container doesn’t have any openings for draining liquid. Do not water your succulents with a spray bottle since the misting might cause the roots to become brittle and the foliage to get moldy.
    • Make sure that your succulents are always kept clean.Lady wipeing off a leaf
Indoor plants will unavoidably collect dust on their surfaces, which can impede their growth, over time. Lightly dampen a cloth and wipe the leaves and spines with it.
    • The Best Soil for Succulents.
Ordinary potting soil, or even dirt from your own yard, would not do for succulents, as they require well-draining soil. Consider using cactus soil, perlite, pumice, or potting soil mixed with sand or pumice. Because succulent roots are so easily damaged, repotting them requires extreme caution.

Our top 3 recommended indoor succulent

A good place to begin is with succulents that have their own natural green colouring. Some excellent examples and easiest to grow include the many types of Haworthia, Crassulas, and Gasteria,  such as those shown in the following images.

Haworthiopsis attenuata, originally Haworthia attenuata, is a South African succulent.

A lot more water, but less often.

Watering is the most common issue that novice succulent growers run into while trying to keep their plants alive indoors.

Obviously, this is a big thing! It takes a surprising amount of water to keep a succulent in good health. On the other hand, they’re not as fussy about watering as other indoor plants.

However, I wouldn’t even go on to suggest that succulents don’t need water very often. The bottom line is as follows…

While succulents prefer to have their roots submerged in water, the water evaporates fast from the plants’ leaves and flowers. After a few days, the soil should be re-watered.

When caring for succulents indoors, it is best practice to avoid getting water directly on the leaves of the plant. It can cause rotting if it stays on the leaf for an extended period of time.

Do not water your indoor succulents every day. That will put an end to them quickly.
