The Hawaiian Banyan Tree:  Explore the legacy and captivating allure of the Hawaiian Banyan Tree that graces the landscape of Hawaii. Notably, the Banyan tree is a member of the fig family, comprising over 700 species.  Its interest extends beyond its unappetizing reddish fruit because tiny nesting wasps pollinate it.

What Sets The Banyan Tree Apart?

All banyans belong to the strangler fig group, emerging from seeds that fall onto other trees. Consequently, seed roots envelop their hosts, producing pillars to support the tree’s branches, giving the appearance of new trunks. But, here’s an astonishing twist: this tree can move. It intriguingly “walks” to new locations, a phenomenon defying expectations.

    Amazing Banyan Tree in Maui

This immense tree doesn’t sprout conventionally from a seed. Instead, it grows like a vine, linking to “host” plants to form its twisted roots and wide branches.  The Hawaiian Banyan Tree “walks” by developing roots wherever it can and sprouting new ones as necessary.

Banyan trees may expand laterally because their branches have aerial roots that extend deep into the earth to generate new trunks. Notably, The worlds largest banyan tree resides near Kolkata, India, a 250-year-old marvel that sprawls across 3.5 acres, resembling a mini-forest.

As it matures, the banyan tree’s luxuriant canopy of leaves creates a mystical tunnel effect, adding to its allure.

Grieving for Hawaii and the Imperiled Banyan tree. Since Tuesday, August 8th, the Hawaiian island of Maui has been on fire, consumed by flames that have destroyed the island’s western part and killed more than 106 people as of Wednesday, August 15th, 2023. In fact,at least 271 structures have been destroyed in the seaside town of Lahaina, a major tourist attraction and home to around 12,000 people, and a 150-year-old banyan tree is now at risk. According to the National Park Service, Lahaina, which was formerly the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom, was loved by everyone from nobility to whalers to missionaries. After conquering and uniting the Hawaiian islands, Kamehameha I, Hawaii’s first monarch, made the city his royal palace more than two centuries ago. Some decades later, an eight-foot-tall banyan sapling was planted in the plaza between the Lahaina Courthouse and Lahaina Harbor, becoming the city’s most recognizable landmark. To mark the 50th anniversary of the first Protestant mission in Lahaina, a tree was gifted from India.

It is not a good time to visit Maui right now. But there are things you can do that will help.

“In the weeks ahead, the collective resources and attention of the federal, state, and county governments, the West Maui community, and the travel industry must be focused on the recovery of residents who were forced to evacuate their homes and businesses,” the Hawaii Tourism Authority said in a statement Saturday.

In order to accommodate residents who cannot return home yet, numerous hotels have temporarily stopped accepting new reservations.

Donations may be sent to the Hawaii Community Foundation, the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement, or the Maui Food Bank if you’d like to contribute from afar. A list of verified GoFundMe campaigns is kept up to date.

    Questions People Asked

There are many kinds of fig trees, and most of them, like the Banyan tree, are stranglers. (Think of the honeysuckle bush and other plants that grab other plants and use them as props.)

The entire process starts when an animal or bird that is looking for food drops a seed on the branch of a nearby tree. This tree is called the host tree.

The seed grows roots that reach the ground and wrap around the base of the tree it grows on. The roots wrap around and connect with the trunk of the host plant, creating a barrier that makes the trunk smaller and pushes it to fight for food.

When this happens, the host tree can sometimes die. Because of this, the new Banyan tree looks more like a bunch of big roots than a standard tree stem.

It "looks burned" after the Maui fires, according to county authorities, but the roots might still be fine. One of Lahaina's most treasured icons, a banyan tree that's 150 years old, is still surviving among the burnt wreckage of the ancient town.

The old banyan tree is one of the few recognizable features that survived the fire.

You can find Maui's oldest live Banyan Tree at Lahaina's Banyan Court Park. In terms of tree age, we're talking about 150 years here. Over the years, a great deal of history has been made at this location.Burned Out Surroundings The Hawaiian Banyan Tree
